Ingredients

15 ripe Golden apples15 cinnamon sticks15 tablespoons of light brown sugar + 5 tablespoons for sprinkling2 cups of Port wine (I used red, but you can use white if preferred)1 cup of dark rum

Get Portuguese ingredients

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 285°F (140°C).
  2. Core the apples and place them in a baking dish.
  3. Insert one cinnamon stick into each apple, and add 1 tablespoon of light brown sugar inside each apple.
  4. Pour the Port wine and rum over the apples, and sprinkle the remaining sugar on top.
  5. If you like, you can also sprinkle some ground cinnamon (optional).
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the apples begin to crack.
  7. Turn off the oven and leave them inside for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the liquids to turn into a thick, delicious syrup.
  8. Serve hot or cold.
